WHEN I GROW UP..............

When I grow up I am going to buy a Pied a terre in New York. In fact I am going to live in the Dakota. This glorious building situated on 72st and Central Park West was built between the years 1880-1884. Edward Clarke who developed the Dakota, introduced a new way of living for the rich of New York - instead of living in homes with servants the potential tenants would share the building and rent full serviced flats instead. Over the last 20 years the upper west side has become one of the most fashionable addresses and the Dakota one of its most prominent. Apartments inside range from 4-20 rooms and none of the 65 residences are the same. Some rooms are as long as 50 feet with ceilings 16 feet high. The architecture can best be described as North German renaissance, though many architecture buffs will tell you that the inside is decidedly French in character. Famous residents have included Judy Garland, Leonard Bernstein, Lauren Bacall, Boris Karloff and Connie Chung.....it is probably best known for where former Beatle John Lennon was gunned down in December 1980.
